Peaceful Moment

39″ x 24″ original wildlife painting

This lion was one of three males that were travelling together when I visited South Africa in July 2013.

We knew they were in the immediate area but tracking them at first light proved to be a challenge. We finally heard them roaring across the river valley — success was nearby! We raced across the river and entered the thickets. Seeing the three of them together coming through the underbrush made my heart skip a beat. As we followed them, they provided numerous photo opportunities on their way to the river. One by one, they took turns drinking at the river.

All three of these males were heavily scarred from fighting. We were told that when a trio like this penetrates a new territory, they can kill dozens of existing resident lions in the land dispute. A painful and harsh reality of the African bush.

This painting is sold.
